Spud's Nitro GrindTM
Roller Camshaft
Are you running an injected small block Chevy on more than 30% nitromethane? You need to be running THIS camshaft! After getting the recommendations of 6 different big name manufacturers and trying their different grinds, it became obvious that none of them had the perfect cam for this application. Some were a gain, some were a big loss on the time slips. There just isn't an "off the shelf" cam that is optimal - they all appear to be a compromise in some way or another.
After testing different cams and seeing what worked (and what didn't), we had custom grinds made up to our own specs. We utilized everything we learned about what nitro likes through track testing and experience. This grind has proven to be absolutely the best performer of them all.
Fantastic performance can indeed be obtained with modest equipment. This cam was developed in a stock 350 block (360 CID) utilizing inexpensive 23° iron heads, an old Hilborn injector and nothing too special in the rotating assembly. No fancy shaft rockers, down nozzles, dry sumps, or any of that. A mostly stock powerglide and 3.73 rear gears in a 1500 pound dragster yielded a 7.400 ET on 78% nitro while only spinning to 6800 RPM at the top end.
This cam has an aggressive profile, but reasonable lift so that it can be used with easily attainable and affordable components. The important part is that it has the specs that injected nitro likes! It is intended to be used with 1.6:1 ratio rockers on the intake and 1.52:1 on the exhaust to deliver .707"/.673 lift at the valve after .018" lash. Since using nitro requires a bit lower compression than methanol (11-12:1), piston to valve clearance shouldn't be a big problem with lift in this range. Of all the specs on this cam, the lobe center is the least important. That means if you do have to advance or retard it a couple of degrees in either direction to gain needed clearance, it really doesn't affect things very much at all.
Since aluminum rods are usually employed at higher percentages, this cam utilizes a small base circle. Clearance between the lobes and the rods shouldn't be a big issue. If it is, you won't have to do as much clearance grinding thanks to this reduced base circle.

They are affordable, practically indestructible and rebuildable. Buying "half sets" of these to get the ratios you need for Spud's Nitro GrindTM (1.6/1.52) is much more expensive than buying 16 of the same rocker. We’re happy to make this more affordable for customers by buying and mixing sets for you.
